DAO DE JING

Chapter 53

Translation by K Ellis

If I have but a little sense,
I will walk upon the great Way,
and fear only to stray from it.
For the great Way is smooth,
yet people delight in byways.

The palaces are polished until they shine,
while fields lie overgrown and wild,
and storehouses stand empty.

Rulers are draped in fine silks,
wearing sharp swords at their sides,
feasting until taste no longer delights,
hoarding wealth beyond measure.

This is called the splendor of thieves.
This is contrary to the Way.
