DAO DE JING

Chapter 79

Translation by K Ellis

When settling a great grievance,
some resentment always remains.
How can this be considered good?

Therefore, the sage holds the creditor’s tally,
yet does not demand what is owed.
One with virtue attends to the contract;
one without virtue attends to collection.

The Way of heaven has no favorites,
yet always stands with the good.
