To yield is to be made whole.
To bend is to become straight.
To be empty is to be filled.
To be worn is to be renewed.
To have little is to gain.
To have much is to be confused.
Therefore, the sage holds to the One,
and becomes a model for the world.
She does not display herself, and so shines clearly.
She does not justify herself, and so is distinguished.
She does not boast, and so is credited.
She does not pride herself, and so she endures.
Because she does not contend,
no one under heaven can contend against her.
The ancient saying, ‘to yield is to be made whole’;
how could these be empty words?
Become truly whole,
and all things will return to you.
